Speed a Likely Factor in Single-Vehicle Crash near Chesapeake on W. Va. 61

December 17, 2010 - Charleston, W.Va. - One person was sent to the hospital following a crash near Chesapeake on Sunday.

The Charleston Daily Mail reports that the accident occurred at around 12:30 p.m. Sunday on W.Va. 61 between Chesapeake and Chelyan. A 42-year-old man from Winifrede was driving his rented Honda sedan westbound on the roadway at a high rate of speed when he evidently lost control of the vehicle, went off of the roadway and overturned his vehicle.

Witnesses on the scene stated that, though the man had been passing other vehicles in the legal passing zones, he was speeding the whole time. The man was attempting to maneuver back into the westbound lane, when his vehicle went off of the roadway and began to slide.

The vehicle then crashed into an embankment and began to spin. It clipped a telephone pole mid-spin and overturned.

The man received injuries in the crash and was rushed to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital. Officials believe the man's injuries to be non-life-threatening.

The identity of the injured man has not yet been released.

The single-vehicle accident remains under investigation.
