Several People Hospitalized in I-79 Accident on Thanksgiving Weekend

November 29, 2010 - Harrison County, W.Va. - Several people were sent to the hospital following an accident on Interstate 79 Friday morning.

WBOY reports that the crash occurred shortly after 7 a.m. on Interstate 79 close to mile marker 116. A Plymouth van was travelling northbound on the interstate when its driver evidently lost control of the vehicle. According to firefighters on the scene, the van then collided with an abandoned vehicle on the side of the road.

Several people were injured in the accident. One person had to be flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital by HealthNet immediately following the crash. The rest of the injured were transported to United Hospital Center via ambulance.

The number of people injured and the severity of their injuries is unknown at this time.

The accident remains under investigation by the Harrison County Sheriff's Department. The Nutter Fork Volunteer Fire Department, the Lost Creek Volunteer Fire Department and the Anmoore EMS were also on the scene in response to the accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
