School Bus and Street Sweeper Collide in Beckley; 5 Hurt

January 6, 2011 - Beckley, W.Va. - Five people were sent to the hospital Tuesday morning when a school bus and a street sweeper collided in Raleigh County.

The Charleston Daily Mail reports that the accident happened at around 8:05 a.m. Tuesday on the East Beckley Bypass in Raleigh County. The school bus was carrying students to Beckley-Stratton Middle School and Beckley Elementary School when it crashed into a street sweeper.

Five people received injuries in the crash and were transported to an area hospital immediately following the accident. The bus driver, the street sweeper operator, and two students on the school bus have since been treated and released.

An aide on the bus was also taken to the hospital, though she has not yet been released. The extent of her injuries is unknown.

The identities of those involved in the accident are unavailable at this time.

The cause of the school bus accident remains to be determined. The accident is under ongoing investigation.
