October 28, 2010 - Institute, W.Va. - A West Virginia Public Service Commission officer was sent to the hospital following an accident on Interstate 64.
WBOY reports that the accident happened at around 10 a.m. Monday on Interstate 64 close to the Institute exit. The officer was standing outside of his vehicle on the westbound side of I-64 at the time of the accident. It has been reported that an oncoming car hit the officer.
The injured man, Weight Enforcement officer Fred McComas, was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center immediately following the accident. The extent of McComas' injuries is unknown.
McComas was released from the hospital later the same day, said a Public Service Commission spokesperson.
Several lanes of the Interstate were closed for some time following the accident. The identity of the driver of the car that struck McComas has not yet been released. It is unknown if charges will be filed.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
