Police Investigating Single-Vehicle Wreck on Turnpike on Thanksgiving Day

November 29, 2010 - Mabscott, W.Va. - One man was sent to the hospital Thursday morning following a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 77 (the Turnpike).

WBOY reports that the turnpike accident occurred at around 11 a.m. Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, close to the Mabscott exit ramp at mile marker 42. The man was driving his Ford Explorer southbound on the turnpike when, for reasons unknown, the vehicle ran off of the roadway and over an embankment.

According to dispatchers, the man was first transported to Raleigh General Hospital. He was later flown by medical helicopter to a hospital in Charleston.

The man's medical condition is unknown at this time. According to troopers, however, the man was stabilized at Raleigh General Hospital before being transported to Charleston. The identity of the man is yet to be released.

The turnpike accident remains under investigation. Police investigating the accident have said that a crash of this type in this area is uncommon and "odd."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
