Pedestrian Dies after Being Struck by City of Buckhannon-Owned Garbage Truck

November 23, 2010 - Buckhannon, W.Va. - One man has died following a pedestrian accident involving a garbage truck in Upshur County on Thursday, Nov. 18.

WBOY reports that the accident happened at around 11:15 a.m. Thursday at the Twin Oaks-Meadowlands Trailer Park off of Brushy Fork Road. Joseph Robinson, 40, of Upshur County, was walking behind the garbage truck when the large vehicle began to reverse. The truck then backed into Robinson.

Robinson sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon immediately following the accident. He was then transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was pronounced dead at Ruby Memorial later Thursday evening.

The garbage truck involved in the accident is owned by the city of Buckhannon. The identity of the truck driver has not yet been released.

The fatal pedestrian accident is under ongoing investigation. All further investigations are being handled by the Upshur County Sheriff's Department.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
