One Flown to Hospital after Ice Cream Truck Overturns on I-68 in Cheat Lake

March 4, 2011 - Cheat Lake, W.Va. - One person had to be flown to the hospital after a tractor trailer overturned on Interstate 68.

WDTV reports that the truck accident happened at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on I-68 close to the 12.5 mile marker. The tractor trailer, carrying 100s of cartons of Heath ice cream, was driving westbound on 1-68 when it evidently began to swerve.

The tractor trailer lost control and then rolled about 500 feet before it crashed into a guardrail and finally came to a rest on its side.

The driver of the truck, Norman Capehart of Missouri, was trapped in the vehicle after the truck accident. Emergency crews had to cut him from the vehicle before he could be flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Capehart's medical condition is unknown at this time. However, police stated that he was alert and speaking after the I-68 truck accident.

Interstate 68 was blocked to traffic for some time while the helicopter landed and emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

The truck accident is under ongoing investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
