Ohio Woman Killed in Accident on Interstate 79 in Lewis County

July 19, 2010 - Weston, W.Va. - An accident occurring early Sunday morning on Interstate 79 in Lewis County took the life of an Ohio woman. The crash seems to have been caused by an old muffler that was left in the road.

WBOY reported that the accident involved two vehicles, one of which was severely damaged and had rolled over at least once. Kimberly Todd, of Kent, Ohio, the passenger in the damaged vehicle, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Deputies stated the driver, Arlene Todd, of Wellsville, Ohio, was transported to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital with a possible broken arm. Thanks to the help of bystanders, Todd was able to get out of the car before emergency personnel arrived on the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle, a female of undisclosed identity, was uninjured. Investigators showed that both she and Todd had hit the remains of a car muffler abandoned in the roadway.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lewis County Sheriff's Department.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
