Multiple Semi-Trucks Collide on I-470 in Bethlehem

March 18, 2011 - Bethlehem W.V. - Two people were injured on Wednesday after a multi-vehicle accident that closed parts of Interstate 470 for several hours. WBOY reports that the crash occurred on Wednesday morning just after rush hour.

Police have released little information on how this accident occurred, but they say the crash involved two semi-trucks and a pickup truck. The trucks were traveling eastbound on Interstate 470 when they somehow collided. Video from the scene appears to show that the white pickup truck was sandwiched between two large semi-trucks. The pickup truck was thrown up onto the guardrail, while the rear semi-truck suffered a great deal of front-end damage. Wreckage, including the pickup truck's bumper, was strewn across the eastbound lanes of the Interstate. Crews were also forced to deal with spilled gasoline.

Two of the three truck drivers suffered personal injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their identities have not been released, and police have not disclosed the extent of their injuries. The third truck driver was not injured.

Traffic on Interstate 470 near Bethlehem was impacted for several hours as workers attempted to clean up gasoline that spilled from one of the trucks.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
