Minivan Crosses Interstate Median, Resulting in Fatal I-79 Crash

December 28, 2010 - Anmoore, W.Va. - A person was killed in a 2-vehicle head-on collision Tuesday morning on Interstate 79.

According to reports from WBOY.com the fatal crash occurred at about 11 a.m. in Harrison County, on a stretch of northbound I-79 close to the Anmoore exit.

Officials say the collision occurred when a southbound minivan bearing Pennsylvania plates crossed the highway median and crashed into a Ford F-150 pickup truck. The pickup truck had West Virginia license plates.

Police said one person in the minivan died in the crash. Another person in the van was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown via medical helicopter.

Meanwhile, the driver of the northbound pickup truck received only minor injuries. This injured individual did not immediately head to a medical facility for treatment.

Authorities have not yet released the names of any of the victims involved in the accident, either from the van or the pickup truck.

Investigations into the fatal I-79 accident are ongoing and no cause has been given as to why or how the minivan lost control and traveled into oncoming traffic.

Travel on northbound I-79 was reduced to one lane while police investigated the scene and performed emergency response and clean-up.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
