Marietta, WV Man Killed In ATV Accident

When operating an all-terrain vehicle, there are certain behaviors to avoid in the interest of safety. These include driving at night, drinking alcohol, and riding without a helmet. One West Virginia man may have ignored all 3 safety precautions - and lost his life because of it.

Man Dies on ATV After Attending Party

In the early morning hours of July 18, 2010, a man was killed in an ATV accident in the city of Marietta. Police officials say that Adam P. LeMasters succumbed to massive head trauma and was pronounced dead on arrival at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office report states that LeMasters tried to leave a party around 2:15 a.m. But after starting his ATV, the vehicle rolled several times down the driveway of the home. LeMasters was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, and officials believe that alcohol consumption may have played a role in the tragedy.

Echoes of a Similar Tragedy

The recent ATV accident occurred exactly 4 months after another ATV crash in the state claimed the life of its driver and injured its passenger. Authorities in the Mingo County town of Bias say the ATV's driver lost control and the vehicle went down an embankment around 7:30 p.m. March 18. Dozens of people sustain serious or fatal injuries in ATV accidents each year in the state of West Virginia.
