Man Pulled from Fiery Car Accident on I-79 in Marion County

July 27, 2010 - Marion County - A man was injured Monday afternoon in a car accident on Interstate 79.

WDTV reports that the accident occurred at around 3:45 p.m. Monday, near mile marker 135. A 45-year-old man was injured in the accident after he reportedly lost control of his Corvette on I-79. He evidently crossed a lane of traffic and slammed into a concrete median.

According to deputies of the Marion County Sheriff's Department, the Corvette then caught fire with the accident victim trapped inside. A passerby saw the crash and managed to pull the man from the flaming vehicle through the sun roof.

The man was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital by HealthNet. At this time his injuries and condition are unknown.

Traffic on I-79 was stalled for more than 3 miles as a result of the afternoon crash. The Marion County Sheriff's Department is conducting further investigations into the accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
