Man Dies After Being Thrown From Vehicle in Randolph County Crash

October 8, 2010 - Elkins, W.Va. - One man has died following a car accident in Randolph County Wednesday night.

WBOY reports that the fatal car crash occurred at 11:11 p.m. Wednesday on Route 33 roughly 1/2 mile past the Elkins Econo Lodge. A 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck was driving eastbound when it attempted to maneuver a curve and reportedly lost control. The truck then crossed the road before colliding with an embankment and rolling back into the road.

Two people, Nathaniel Simmons, 23, of Mabie, and Ronald Nelson, 22, of Montrose, were in the truck at the time of the accident. Simmons was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and suffered fatal injuries as a result. He later died.

Nelson also was injured in the crash, but his injuries were considered non-life-threatening. He was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. According to deputies from the Randolph County Sheriff's Department, Nelson has since been treated and released.

It is not clear at this time which of the men was driving the truck. Accident reconstruction teams were on the scene Thursday morning. The fatal pick-up truck accident remains under investigation by the Randolph County Sheriff's Department.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
