Man Crashes SUV in Charleston on I-64, Charged with DUI

January 14, 2011 - Charleston, W.Va. - A man was charged with driving under the influence after he crashed his vehicle Monday morning.

The Charleston Gazette reports that the crash occurred at around 2 a.m. Monday on Interstate 64 near Cross Lanes. Bobby Junior McGhee, 42, of Charleston, was travelling westbound in his 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer when he lost control of the vehicle. The Trailblazer then skidded off of the roadway and collided with an embankment.

McGhee received no injuries in the accident. No other victims or vehicles were involved in the accident.

When deputies of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department arrived on the scene, they noticed McGhee had trouble standing and balancing. According to McGhee, he had been out to celebrate his birthday and, as he told deputies, was too drunk to drive.

After McGhee failed a field sobriety test, he was charged with driving under the influence and transported to South Central Regional Jail. As of Tuesday, McGhee was free on bond.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
