Man Charged with Fleeing the Scene After Car Hits Utility Pole in Huntington

March 29, 2011 - Huntington, W.Va. - A man who crashed his vehicle into a utility pole early Thursday morning has been charged with fleeing the scene of an accident.

WSAZ reports that the crash occurred at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Oney Avenue and Davis Street in Huntington. The man was driving on Oney Avenue when he apparently lost control of his vehicle.

The car ran off of the roadway, where it collided with a hill. The car then crossed over the road again and crashed into a utility pole.

No one was in or near the vehicle when police arrived on the scene. However, officers were able to locate the man quickly. When police found him, Deandre Ziegler was walking along 20th street and carrying the keys to the crashed vehicle.

Ziegler was charged with fleeing the scene of the accident. Police said further charges are pending.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
