Four-Vehicle Crash on I-470 in Wheeling Hospitalizes Two

April 4, 2011 - Wheeling, W.Va. - A four-vehicle accident sent two people to the hospital Saturday morning.

WBOY reports that the accident occurred on Interstate 470 West on the hill in Bethlehem, near the Wheeling and Moundsville exit. Four vehicles were involved in the crash. The cause and/or nature of the accident are unclear at this time.

Wheeling fire crews say that one person was unconscious on the scene. Two people had to be transported to Ohio Valley Medical Center for treatment. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.

The identities of those involved in the accident have not yet been released.

Officials from the Wheeling Police Department, the Wheeling Fire Department, the West Virginia Department of Highways, and the Ohio County Sheriff's Department were on the scene in response to the accident.

It has been neither confirmed nor denied that adverse weather conditions were a factor in the crash. The accident is under ongoing investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
