Family of 4 Killed in Fatal Car Accident on Highway 21 in Mineral Wells

July 19, 2010 - Mineral Wells, W, Va. - A family of 4 is dead after a fatal car accident on Highway 21 near Longwell Road this past Sunday evening.

WBOY reports that Michael Cunningham, 38, his wife Carrie Cunningham, and their two children were all killed after their vehicle collided with another. The crash was a head-on collision.

Dan Affolter, 41, of Mineral Wells, was the driver of the other vehicle involved. According to police, Affolter was driving north on WV 21 as the Cunningham family was driving south. Affolter claims he was trying to avoid colliding with the Cunningham's vehicle, but ended up crashing into the passenger side.

Investigations are being handled by the Wood County Sheriff's Office. These investigations are yet to be completed.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
