Driver Killed When Vehicle Goes Off Road During South Charleston Crash

October 26, 2010 - Tornado, W.Va. - One person was killed in a single-vehicle accident Saturday evening.

WBOY reports that the accident happened at around 8:45 p.m. Saturday on Smith Creek Road between South Charleston and Tornado. Emergency responders stated that they arrived to find the vehicle off of the roadway and upside down.

Preliminary investigations have led officials to believe that the car was travelling at a high rate of speed prior to the car accident. It then went off the side of the road before crossing into the opposite lane of traffic, flipping over and finally coming to rest in a nearby creek.

The driver of the vehicle, Leah C. Johnson, 44, died in the crash.

At this time, it is believed that high speeds and a potential overcorrection of the vehicle were primary factors in the crash. The fatal accident remains under investigation by State Police.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
