Couple Injured When Vehicle Goes Over Embankment Off Alt. Route 28

Aug. 2, 2010 - Wiley Ford, W. Va. - Two Cumberland residents suffered multiple injuries after a car accident in which their vehicle went over a steep embankment in Cumberland.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the accident happened off Alternate Route 28 in a site referred to as "The Rock." The Rock overlooks the Allegany County Fairgrounds. The accident took place at around 10:45 p.m. on July 27, according to police.

The crash occurred when the driver of a 2007 Kia passenger vehicle, Beverley Ann Nicely, was reversing the vehicle and accidentally went over the mountainside. The vehicle was then reported to have travelled 200 to 250 feet down the embankment. It remained upright when it finally stopped against a tree.

Beverley Ann Nicely and her husband, Kenneth Nicely, were transported to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center. Both suffered multiple injuries. At this time, none of those injuries appear to be life-threatening. The vehicle, according to police, was demolished.

The Cumberland accident is still under investigation. Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
