Truck drivers have stringent regulations by which they must abide in order to stay in accordance with the law. The rules are laid out by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and are meant to serve as a way to keep everyone on the road safer.

Before truck drivers are allowed to hit the road, there are several requirements that they must meet. Drivers should review the following checkpoints to ensure they are ready to get behind the wheels of their rigs.

Checklist for Truck Drivers

Truck drivers must be able to check off “yes” to all the following items before they can legally operate a semi.

  • Do you have a valid CDL?
  • Do you have the correct endorsements for what you are carrying?
  • Do you have proof of insurance?
  • Do you have proof of medical clearance to drive?
  • Is the U.S. DOT number displayed on your vehicle?
  • Do you have your truck’s registration?
  • Are you in accordance with your company’s loading procedures?
  • Did you inspect your cargo to ensure it’s loaded correctly?
  • Do you have a copy of yesterday’s vehicle inspection report?
  • Do you have a copy of the truck’s annual inspection?
  • Do you have a logbook to record your hours?
  • Do you have all the required safety equipment in your truck, e.g. fire extinguisher, warning triangles, etc.?
  • Have you adequately prepped your co-driver for safe travelling

Negligence Leads to Truck Accidents

The FMCSA carefully regulates truck drivers and carriers because without proper handling, a truck can be a dangerous weapon causing death and destruction on the highway. If the drivers fail to abide by the rules, they can be liable should they cause an accident.
