January 17, 2010 - Clarksburg, W.Va. - Two people had to be flown to the hospital Saturday afternoon after a vehicle crashed in Clarksburg.
WBOY reports that the crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. Saturday close to the intersection of West Main Street and South Second Street. According to Clarksburg Police, a Chevrolet Cavalier was travelling in front of the Chase Bank building when the driver evidently lost control of the vehicle.
The Cavalier crashed into two parked cars, smashed a parking meter, and hit a light pole before it finally came to a stop at the intersection.
Two people, a female driver and male passenger, were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Both people had to be cut from the vehicle by emergency response crew members. Two helicopters were required to fly the injured people to a local hospital. The extent of either victim's injuries is unknown at this time.
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. The crash remains under investigation.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
