Barbour County Man Pleads Guilty in DUI Crash with 4-Year-Old in Car

Aug. 4, 2010 - Philippi, W. Va. - A man has pleaded guilty in a West Virginia DUI accident involving a small child.

WBOY reports that Royal Cale, of Barbour County, was driving while under the influence of alcohol in January of this year. His impairment led him to run his vehicle off the road, causing a crash on U.S. Route 250.

Police said Cale had a 4-year-old girl in the car with him at the time. According to State Police, the girl was not in a car seat and not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. The child suffered serious accident injuries and had to be treated at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Cale was charged with child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury. He has been  sentenced to 1-10 years in state prison. However, the Judge has agreed to suspend the sentence if Cale can successfully complete the Community Corrections Program.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
