At Least 2 Injured in Crash Involving Jail Transport Van in Charleston

December 10, 2010 - Charleston, W.Va. - Two people were taken to the hospital following an accident involving a regional jail transport van.

WSAZ reports that the accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday at the corner of Quarrier Street and Clendenin Street. The accident happened when the van collided with another vehicle on the corner.

According to emergency crews on the scene, at least 2 people incurred injuries in the accident. Those 2 people, and possibly others, were transported to a local hospital immediately following the accident.

The medical condition of those injured is unknown at this time. The identities of the injured, and whether they were prisoners or prison staff, are also unknown.

The roadway was blocked for some time following the accident. All lanes have since been reopened. The accident is under ongoing investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
