3 People Injured When SUV Crashes into Light Pole During Charleston Wreck

November 9, 2010 - Charleston, W.Va. - Three people had to be taken to the hospital after two vehicles collided in Charleston.

WBOY reports that the accident happened at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Dickinson Street and Virginia Street in Charleston. The two cars crashed into one another in the intersection.

One of the cars, a Ford Explorer, then collided with a light pole and a city services building. Many of the building's windows were shattered on impact.

Emergency responders had to cut into the Explorer in order to rescue the vehicle's occupants. Three people, all occupants of the Explorer, were sent to the hospital immediately following the accident. The medical conditions of these people are unknown at this time.

Due to the accident, Virginia Street at Dickinson Street and the South Side Bridge were blocked to traffic for some time. Emergency crews had to clear the light pole from the roadway before the streets could be reopened.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
