3 Injured In I-79 Car Accident That Closes Road

August 4, 2010 - Marion County, W. Va. - Three people were sent to the hospital Monday afternoon after a car accident on Interstate 79.

WBOY reports that the accident occurred when a highway assistance vehicle stopped on the side of the road, near the 138 mile marker, to assist a motorist with changing a flat tire. As the work was being done, a Ford Focus crashed into the parked vehicle from behind.

The driver of the Ford Focus was trapped in his vehicle after the crash. The highway assistance worker was trapped underneath his own vehicle. Both victims were freed by fire crews and transported by helicopter to the hospital.

The driver of the disabled vehicle was also injured in the I-79 accident.

At this time, there is no additional information about the condition of anyone injured in this crash. Authorities were forced to close I-79 for several hours to allow medical personnel and cleanup crews to clear the accident scene. The I-79 accident remains under investigation.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
