3 Hospitalized After Single Vehicle Crash on W.V. Turnpike

December 30, 2010 - Charleston, W.Va. - Three people were injured in a single-vehicle crash on the West Virginia Turnpike on Monday night.

A story in The Charleston Gazette reports that the crash was so severe that all three injured accident victims were trapped in the wreckage. They had to be removed with the aid of emergency crews who used special equipment to cut into the destroyed vehicle.

The Turnpike crash occurred at about 7:30 p.m. near mile marker 78 close to Cabin Creek in Kanawha County. The accident occurred in the northbound lanes of the Turnpike and that portion of the roadway was closed for less than an hour as crews responded to the crash.

Authorities have not yet released the names, ages or hometowns of the victims involved in the accident. At this time, there is no further information about the medical condition of any of the victims, though police said they were not critically injured.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
