2 People Injured in Wellsburg Car Accident After Driver Falls Asleep at Wheel

July 22, 2010 - Wellsburg, W. Va. - A car struck a parked vehicle early Wednesday morning on State Route 2 in Wellsburg. The crash sent 2 people to the hospital.

WBOY reports that the driver of the car had fallen asleep at the wheel prior to crashing into a parked truck. The female passenger of the vehicle was trapped in the vehicle after the Wellsburg crash and was later removed by rescuers using the Jaws of Life.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver up and walking around the vehicle immediately after the crash. However, both passenger and driver were transported to the hospital for treatment via medical helicopter.

The State Route 2 accident is still under investigation. Investigations are being handled by Wellsburg police officers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
