2 Injured When Elderly Driver Strikes School Bus in Marion County

December 1, 2010 - Fairmont, W.Va. - Two people were sent to the hospital following a crash involving a school bus and a passenger vehicle Monday morning.

WDTV reports that the accident happened shortly before 7 a.m. Monday on Stony Road in Fairmont. A car collided with the rear of a school bus when the car's elderly female driver was evidently unable to stop her vehicle. Several students from Marion County High School were on the bus at the time of the accident.

The elderly woman and one of the students received injuries in the crash. The woman and student were transported to Fairmont General Hospital immediately following the accident. The medical conditions of both the elderly woman and the student are unknown at this time.

The accident remains under investigation by the Marion County Sheriff's Department. Officials from the Marion County Sheriff's Department have stated that charges regarding the accident are pending.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2009 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 356 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
