2 Injured in KRT Bus Accident in Charleston on MacCorkle Avenue

March 15, 2011 - Charleston W.V. - At least two people suffered personal injuries when the bus they were riding in was hit by a car in Charleston. WSAZ News Channel 3 reports that the bus involved was operated by the Kanahwa Valley Regional Transportation Authority (KRT). The accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Friday.

Police say the KRT bus was traveling in Kanawha City in Charleston when it stopped to pick up passengers on MacCorkle Avenue. As the bus was loading passengers, it was rear-ended by a car. Although it is not yet known how many passengers were on the bus at the time of the accident, two people riding on the bus were injured. The victims were transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment. Their identities have not yet been released, and their conditions are currently unknown.

Initial reports indicate that the driver of the car was not injured in the crash. Officers with the Charleston Police Department are still investigating this bus accident, and they have not indicated if any charges will be filed. This is the second accident involving a KRT bus in the past few weeks. WCHS reports that a KRT bus crashed into several cars in early February, although no one was seriously injured.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
