2 Injured and 1 Dead in Fatal Car Accident in Putnam County

July 22, 2010 - Palatka, W. Va. - One man was killed in a fatal car accident earlier this week in Putnam County.

The St. Augustine Record reports that the man was identified as Clifton Owens, 73, of Bristol, Tennessee. According to authorities, a pickup truck and a van collided at the intersection of State Road 19 and State Road 100 on Monday evening. In violation of the truck's right away, the van made a turn in front of the truck to head south on State Road 19.

Owens, a passenger in the van, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van, Ray Lefferty, 65, of Wyoming, and the driver of the truck, Edward Hullender, 49, of Starke, both suffered minor injuries in the Palatka car crash. The 2 drivers were transported to the hospital by medical helicopter.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 West Virginia Crash Statistics show that there were 380 fatalities as a result of car accidents in West Virginia.
